Frequently Asked Questions: If you have a question, please read these previously asked questions and answers first.

Perhaps you immediately find what you need :)

"Which version of SPSS do I need? / I have version XX, is that okay as well?"

SPSS 26 is the latest version. Versions 21,22, 23, 24 and 26 are also okay to use though.

You can download the latest version of SPSS from Surfspot: https://www.surfspot.nl/ibm-spss-statistics-26.html

    "Are the lessons mandatory?"

It is expected that if you want to pass this course, you will attend the workshops.

If you show you already master parts of the material in the intake exam, you may be able to skip those lessons.

    Who should I contact?

The intensive methods course is split into two parts: 1) Methods. 2) Statistics. The parts are taught separately.

    • For issues regarding methods part: please contact Chris Aalberts: info [at] chrisaalberts [dot] nl
    • For issues regarding the statistics part: please contact me. p.b.bellinga [at] eshcc.eur.nl

Is it correct that there is not a book we need to purchase for stats part?

That is correct. You do not have to purchase a book for the statistics part of the intensive methods course.

Instead, we will a paid online program, called I Hate Statistics. You will receive info on how to purchase this later on.

You also need to have a license for SPSS (which you can purchase on Surfspot).

Where should I go? What are the locations of the workshops?

Locations are communicated by the department.

My SPSS works with commas. How do I change it do dots?

Click “File” > “New” > “Syntax”. In the newly opened syntax editor, type

    SET LOCALE = en_US

and click the green “Selection” arrow (or press Cmd + R on your keyboard).

    What about the exams?

    • There will a pre- and post-test. During the course you can test whether you master the topics using the online practice environment.
    • It is not a 'real' exam in the sense there are no grades. We do hope that you will study hard so that you can prove to yourself that you master the foundations of statistics, which you will need during your masters courses.
